Individuality
The author uses the theme of individuality to give Ebony the space to be true to herself, while learning how to navigate the changes happening around her.
Ebony is reluctant to go to Harlem, but as the novel opens, she is on an airplane en route to New York City demonstrating that Ebony is on the other side of the debate. Ebony is thrust into a situation she does not want, but believes she can handle because it is to be short lived. While on the plane, Ebony imagines herself as the pilot because she has “to take control” (1). This leads the reader into the experience of Ebony’s fantasy world. She wants her individuality to be on display.
Ebony does not make an attempt to settle in to her new surroundings, nor does Ebony want to learn about them. Julius makes Ebony go with Bianca...
