Summary

Chapter 30 opens with Ebony deep in her imagination location, overwhelmed by the music and DJ Jule Thief, so much so that she thinks, “I can’t lose control. I can’t lose my soul” (197). Ebony is asked to join the other kids dancing and Ebony says she cannot because she is a “prisoner” (198). Monique challenges Ebony that Ebony does not know what it means to be in prison. Julius tells the crowd that the prize for the night is $250 and to compete at the Apollo Theater. The Genesis Ten crew has been split into two groups: Genesis Five and Cold-Crush Calvin so that they can complete against each other and not have to compete against the Nine Flavas, assuring that The Genesis Ten will get the prize.
