Summary

Menakem opens Chapter 10 "Your Soul Nerve" by remembering that his grandmother often was nervous but knew how to soothe herself--by humming or singing. She would also rock back and forth, side to side--not in a neurotic way, just in a peaceful way. She knew how to settle her soul nerve. In Chapter 11 "Settling and Safeguarding Your Body," Menakem challenges his readers: "you will discover that when you have regard for your own body, it is easier to have regard for other bodies" (153). This personal challenge sets up Chapter 12 which outlines the five-step process of moving through clean pain. Menakem calls the five steps the "five anchors." They include
