Chicago
Chicago is the primary setting for majority of the book. The author is a Chicago native and grew up during the time depicted in the novel. This leads to intricately drawn streets which accurately reflect what Chicago looked and felt like in 1968.
Karen's Apartment
Karen lives with her family in a basement apartment in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. There are three other apartments in the building and it is very easy to hear through the walls.
The Silverberg's Apartment
The Silverberg's apartment is one floor above the Reyes family. It is decorated ornately with artifacts from all over the world. It also has a bevy of plants outside the door, which Karen deems the 'jungle.' In this apartment Karen first hears Anka's taped interview about her past.
