78 Robie Street is the family home purchased by Bernard and Nora after they are married. It becomes the home where Nora raises Jacob. Then, it becomes the home where Jacob and Martha choose to begin their life together. For most of the novel, the home is decorated with photographs from Nora’s past, including photographs of her and Bernard.
Halifax Free Library
Halifax Free Library is where much of the novel occurs. Nora works there as a librarian for most of her life. She gives birth to Jacob while at work. It is also at the library where Nora has a nervous breakdown. Jacob spends much of his childhood at the library. Ironically, he watches as Martha gives birth to their daughter at the library.
