Summary

It is late October 2017. 32-year old Vanessa Wye works as a concierge at a posh hotel resort in Portland along the southern coast of Maine. The tourist season is winding down, the world is sliding into winter. Vanessa finds little reward in her work. She drifts through her days. She sleeps late. She self-medicates on liquor and recreational pharmaceuticals. She sees a therapist but expects little from the sessions. She has few friends and has just gotten out of a six-month relationship. She stays in touch with her mother in Norumbega across the state. They are both struggling to handle the recent death of Vanessa’s father.
