Summary

In Chapter 3, when Areum was born, his parents realized "how much they didn't know" (39). As teenagers, they had never handled a baby before. Mari particularly worried that she did not know how to calm Areum when he was upset. As Areum grew, Daesu marveled at everything Areum did. Gradually, the house filled with baby colors and smells. Mari and Daesu were learning how to be parents.

Mari and Daesu struggled with money. Mari's father agreed to help once he met Areum. The family also worried about Daesu's construction job, as accidents frequently occurred onsite. Then one day, Daesu told his father-in-law that he wanted to open a Nike store.

Mari fell more and more in love with Areum. She did not understand when her mother said negative things about her children. Areum seemed so perfect. Areum kept growing and eventually learned...
