Summary
In Chapter 20, one morning when Turtle is sitting on Buckhorn Beach, she sees Martin walking across the sand toward her. He takes her out to eat breakfast. He tells her how he messed up by leaving her alone. He claims that he had been scared when he saw how much he had become like his father, a person he never wanted to be like. Martin never mentions Turtle’s broken fingers.
When Martin takes Turtle back to the house, there is a young girl, 9 or 10 years old, waiting on the porch. Martin introduces her as Cayenne. Turtle demands to know where the girl came from. Martin will only tell her that they are looking after the girl for a while.
Later that night as Martin is cooking dinner, he flips a coin at Cayenne. He asks her to hold it between her fingers...
