Summary

Chapter 6 opens with Caroline and Father buying some groceries, then leaving Sisters. They recover their sled and snowshoes and start back up the slope. They are soon caught in a fierce snowstorm. Father says they cannot “afford … the exposure” of getting a motel room. He again asks Caroline to trust him and she follows. They see several cabins, but they are all inhabited. Caroline marvels that none of them seems to care that people see the smoke from their fires. Caroline fears they are circling and Father admits he is not certain. They find a yurt and notice black wires “snaking down off the telephone pole” (166) leading into the hut. They find a woman and a boy inside. She agrees Father and Caroline can share the shelter. They introduce themselves as Susan and Paul, and Caroline notices they are under dressed for the harsh...
