Summary

Chapter 4 picks up as Caroline boards a bus separate from Father so it does not seem they are together. They take another bus, careful not to be together, then walk downtown, separately but in sight of each other. They make their way to the forest park and find their camp has been destroyed. Father begins to pace and chant, noting that their stove and other possessions are gone, the encyclopedias wet and ruined. They settle down nearby but neither can really sleep. The next morning, Father says everything is fine. Caroline notes that the more often he repeats it, the less she believes it. Caroline thinks about the orange juice in their refrigerator at the farm while they eat peanut butter sandwiches. As they walk that morning, Caroline can see Father is carelessly breaking sticks and leaves. He recovers an oilskin pouch with scissors...
