Chapter 48 Summary
Gage loses Regan in the woods and begins to get angry. If she doesn't show herself soon, he thinks, he won't have time to explain why he's going to kill her. He hears someone calling Regan's name and realizes he must hurry. He listens closely and hears the faint sound of rocks sliding down the ravine and concludes Regan must have hopped the wall and is hiding down there. He peers over the wall and fires into the ravine, hoping to scare her into showing herself. The shots echo through the ravine and he knows the police will hear them. He again hears someone calling Regan's name. He turns around and fires at the approaching person.
