Chapter 47 Summary
Eric Gage almost wishes Regan would get away. But he knows he can't let her. She must suffer the way his wife has suffered. And more. But he wants to give her a fighting chance. And he wants a chance to tell her, before he kills her, why she has to die.
Regan is frozen in place until she sees the killer raise a gun and fire twice at her. The first bullet strikes the stonewall separating her from the ravine; the second hits a tree behind her.
Finally, she turns and runs, with the killer close behind her. She strays from the path and quickly loses her bearings. She can't believe no one heard the shots fired, and she wonders where all the runners have gone.
The killer fires again, this time striking Regan in the leg. It doesn't bring her down...
