Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is a woman who lives alone in an upside-down house, but her home is constantly filled with children. As the novel opens, an unnamed narrator introduces Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by describing her appearance and her situation, including how and why so many children visit her. She is an older woman who always wears high-heeled shoes and never minds if the little girls want to wear her shoes around the house. She has a hump on her back, and she has told the children that her magic is stored there. She can take on other forms, including that of a witch or a fairy, and the hump is a perfect place for wings.
