Isabel arrives to London from Gardencourt England, the city in which her beloved cousin Ralph recently passed away. In London, Isabel meets her old, suffragist acquaintance, Miss Janeway. Their luncheon is tense and awkward, but fruitful in that Isabel comes to the decision to purchase her freedom from her husband. From there, Isabel visits her best friend of many years, Henrietta Stackpole, who is direct in the scrutiny that she provides her old friend. Isabel knows that the interrogation she receives from Henrietta is meant to be in her best interest, but she hurriedly departs from England for Paris.
