Summary

In Chapter 3, Mrs. Butterfield discovers that her friend, Mrs. Harris, won the weekly football pool. Mrs. Harris was elated that she won the money to buy a Dior dress and anxiously awaited the arrival of a letter declaring the total sum of her winnings. She imagined entering the shop of Christian Dior and choosing a sumptuous gown but “could not help harbouring the suspicion gleaned from the precarious task of the living of daily life and making a go of things that it might not be all that easy” (21). When the letter arrived, Mrs. Harris discovered that her suspicion was warranted; the envelope contained little over one hundred pounds. She was filled with disappointment and attempted to distract herself by thinking about Mr. Wallace’s new girl and imaginary flower gardens.
