Eve Fletcher
Eve Fletcher is a middle-aged single mother and one of the central characters in the novel. Eve is divorced, and after her only child Brendan leaves home to attend college, Eve struggles with her own sense of purpose and identity. She begins taking classes at a local community college in her spare time. Professionally, she is an administrator at a local community center for senior citizens.
Over the course of the narrative, Eve struggles with questions of her own sexuality as she becomes fascinated by pornography featuring only women, and she develops an attraction to a female coworker. She also develops an attraction to Julian Spitzer, an 18-year-old student in one of her community college classes. At the end of the novel, she marries a middle-aged man named George, but she still harbors a very slight sense of doubt regarding the marriage.
