Dorothy Caliban
Dorothy Caliban is the main character of the novel. She is a housewife who is married to Fred. However, their marriage is highly dysfunctional. The two were once in love, but their young son died during a routine surgery because he had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. The tragedy comes as such a shock to Dorothy that she has a miscarriage and also loses her baby. These two losses put Dorothy in the hospital, where she is sedated by the doctors. Instead of working through her grief, Dorothy is encouraged to continue to take medication. When she gets home, she soothes herself by taking long walks and drives at night by herself.
