Summary
There are two different narratives within the chapter. The first is a third-person limited narration about Nat and Ruth at the Love of Christ!, which is a church and an orphanage in upstate New York. The other narrative is written in a first-person limited point of view from the perspective of Cora Sykes.
The first half of this section takes place in the past. Readers meet two orphans, Nat and Ruth, who are best friends and entirely dependent on one another. They have been placed into an orphanage with a man referred to as Father Arthur. He leads the children in studies and worship, teaching them about how dangerous every other religion is.
