Srinivas
Srinivas, the protagonist of the novel, is in his mid-thirties. He has a wife and a young son named Ramu. He is the son of a successful lawyer, but unlike his brother, he chooses not to follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead, Srinivas decides to move from his hometown Talapur to Malgudi, where he makes plans to start a political journal called The Banner.
