Summary

In Chapter Three, Srinivas sees Ravi outside The Banner’s office and invites him in. Ravi admits that he has asked for an hour off work to see if he can find a mysterious woman with whom he once connected. He shows Srinivas a drawing he made of her. Srinivas, impressed, encourages him to become an artist. He says that he is now “only a bank clerk” (35). Ravi takes to dropping in on Fridays to see Srinivas, who pities his friend.

One day, while Ravi is visiting, the printer invites them into his shop. Srinivas is nervous as he has never been allowed in the printer’s shop. The printer chats with Ravi about the fact that he considers printing his “national duty” (38). Srinivas returns home late that night. His wife criticizes The Banner, and Srinivas agrees with her criticism. Srinivas, feeling guilty...
