Felicity
Headlights opens with Felicity confused along the side of a highway. She is a woman who has been dropped off on the side of a road by her new husband. As she sits along the road, she "picks grain of rice from the embroidery of her dress" still "deep in the shock of abandonment" (1-2). At first, she is shocked and confused and these feelings eventually turn to sadness as she realizes her fate after talking to Nené. Felicity cries and Nené begs her to stop. Felicity experiences some growth in the chapter, asserting a kind of motherly role over the other women she meets on the highway. When the black mass of women from the field begin to insult Nené, Felicity comes to her defense.
