Summary
The story opens with Benavides carrying the suitcase that contains his murdered wife to Dr. Corrale’s house. Finding Corrales mingling with friends, he is motioned over by the doctor. Benavides tells him that he must speak to him in private and Dr. Corrales leads him to his study. He asks Benavides why it is so urgent that he must speak to him before his scheduled session, to which Benavides stammers that he is “confused” and thought that he killed his wife (205). Dr. Corrales asks him to leave his wife and follow him, and he gives Benavides two white pills while leading him to a room. He instructs him, “rest while I take care of your problem” (207).
The next day, Benavides awakes to find himself wondering if it was all just a bad dream. Getting out of bed, he searches...
