Summary

The narrator announces at the beginning of the chapter that his brother Walter is depressed. He and his wife go to visit his brother every night after work. Walter has many people visit him each day to check on him. Some Saturdays, the narrator’s mother and Aunt Claris take Walter out to the assembly hall. Ironically, Aunt Claris says, “the more depressed Walter is, the happier people around him feel” (118). Though the narrator thinks that this is silly, he does admit that things in his family are beginning to get better. He mentions that his sister finally married Galdos and his mom even met someone, Mr. Kito. Galdos and his sister now own a farm outside of the city and the whole family goes there on the weekends.
