Summary
Needing to relax, the narrator is spending the weekend in a coastal town away from the city. He decides to continue up the path to the house on foot, being unable to see the road through the grass. Suddenly, he runs into a man digging a hole. The man stutters and begins to explain himself to the narrator who he calls “sir” (54). The narrator wonders what he was digging the hole for and how the man could confuse him for his boss. The digger asks the narrator if he is coming down and he declines, saying that he thinks he made a mistake, and walks toward the house.
The next day, the digger helps the narrator move his luggage indoors, asking “if they were part of the plan” (55). Once he is unpacked, the narrator speaks to the digger about how much longer it...
