Summary

In Section 49, Jane realized that she would never know how much Mr. Niven knew. Jane knew that Paul left without hurry, but the rest of what happened was revealed as Mr. Niven filled in the blanks following Paul’s departure. The car had burst into flames upon impact, leaving a cigarette case with Paul’s initials and a signet ring to identify his body. Paul was late and Emma was left to wonder if she had been stood up. She called Upleigh House, but no one answered. Emma called the police. Mr. Niven left the luncheon and returned to tell Jane what happened and asked her if she would “like to sit down” (145).
