Summary
"Chapter 10: The Wife and Mother (Part One)" begins: “I’m sure we’ve already met” (160). The narrator introduces herself as Mumtaz. She begins her story in New York City when she was in her senior year of college. On Halloween, she was at a party in the East Village with her roommate. There, Mumtaz took some Ecstasy, kissed a couple of acquaintances, and then found herself dancing with a “cute desi boy” on the fire escape (161); they had sex that night. Nine months later, she and Aurangzeb were married. She claims to have loved him but married for the wrong reason.
