Summary
Chapter 14 is titled “Grammatical Shenanigans.” The bus driver stops for pie and Mim goes to the Aces Dairy Dip Mart Stop Plus for ice cream. She challenges the girl scooping ice cream and winds up with a “double-chocolate-espresso-chip-raspberry-mint-caramel-lemon waffle cone.” She discovers a police car with flashing lights at the diner and learns she is in Independence. She remembers that Arlene's nephew, Ahab, lives here. She had decided to hitchhike the rest of the way to Cleveland, and hesitates only for a moment before retrieving her backpack from the bus. Mim is tongue tied when the handsome young man (to be later identified as Beck) wishes her good luck. Mim imagines that in a movie, they would be destined to meet again.
