Summary

Chapter 16, titled "The Turd Tanks," begins with the third person narrator following London as it races across the continent formerly known as Europe. It passes by several tiny towns that could have been hunted down, which makes the people restless. There was talk of food shortages and the heat from the engines was becoming more noticeable on Tier Six. The narrator finds Katherine down in the Gut as she searches for the Apprentice Engineer. She finally tracks him down to the lower decks, which is where London's plumbing was kept and where one of the most experimental labor units of the engineers was kept. It is where they are experimenting in turning human excrement into food, but so far it has not succeeded.
