Summary

In Chapter 20, “Lore, 1985,” Lore and Andres are together when the earthquake strikes. They get out of the building, running over broken glass in bare feet. They stop to help a woman with a baby while her older child is pulled from the rubble.

In Chapter 21, “Cassie, 2017,” Duke is talking to Cassie about the wedding. Cassie’s book is “an unspoken source of tension” (214) between them. Andres calls and tells Cassie that their father is drinking again and that some bills are not getting paid. Cassie tells Andrew that she will talk to their father. Cassie explains what is happening to Duke and Duke suggests that they go and visit Cassie’s family at Thanksgiving. Cassie is angry and compares herself to Lore, knowing that she cannot continue to keep secrets from Duke.
