Rustin, Randolph, and others are socialists. How does the book describe socialism? In what ways does their socialism impact the leaders’ views on civil rights and employment? How does the book contrast socialism and capitalism?
The book describes capitalists as those who believe that free markets will lead to the best outcomes for many. It describes socialism as the economic view that the government should play a notable role in economic structures if the system is to work optimally for all. The march organizers believe the government should be responsible for retraining displaced workers and for ensuring quality jobs for everybody. Because of this, the leaders organize the march to persuade the government to take action. While many of the leaders are focused specifically on jobs for Black people, others emphasize the need for quality jobs for everybody.
Discuss the different views people have about the march including King, Rustin, Jackson, and Kennedy. What reasons do people give for being in favor of and opposed to the march?
