Summary
In Chapter 15, “Rising at Dawn,” Martin Niverth, a white police officer, is assigned to work with William Wallace, a Black police officer, at the march. This is uncommon because officers usually work with people of the same race as partners. “The city starts to resemble a police state” as massive numbers of law enforcement officers and the military descend on the city to keep the peace” (119). The American Nazi, Rockwell, also shows up with some of his followers, but they are quickly surrounded by police officers and cannot move. Transportation captains talk to their people and explain the orderly environment they want to preserve. They want the demonstration to be purposeful.
