Summary
Chapter 9 is titled “Beyond Dead Ends.” Aaron wakes to remember he never called Genevieve back and discovers Thomas is journaling, which he does most mornings. Thomas directs Aaron to a new toothbrush in the bathroom. Aaron and Thomas have cereal with cookies crumbled in it for breakfast. Outside, Thomas tells Aaron that a friend named Victor planned a party birthday party for Thomas the previous year but canceled at the last minute to attend a concert. Thomas feels he and Aaron are similar because “Everyone else seems resigned to grow up and become nobodies who are stuck here. They don't dream” (81). Aaron believes Thomas is talking about his suicide attempt by Thomas counters, saying everyone makes mistakes. Aaron confirms he would never attempt that again. They see a woman carrying a picket sign against Leteo.
