Summary

Chapter 5 is titled “A Happy Face Without Eyes.” Aaron goes to the ice cream parlor where Thomas works. Aaron comments on the fact that this is a physically cool place to be in the dead of summer, but Thomas tells the manager at the end of his shift that he quits. He says “I always quit things I'm tired of dealing with” (46). They join a game of manhunt and take refuge on a roof. Aaron reveals that he loves Genevieve partly because “She didn't hate me when I gave her reason to” (48). He tells Thomas his dad committed suicide which “put me in a bad place” (48).
