Abilene finds letters written to Jinx from Ned Gillen during Ned's time in the military during World War I.

Hattie Mae's Column

Hattie Mae has a column in the local paper that tells all the gossip around town. Abilene reads this column from the time in which her father lived in Manifest and finds in it things that support Miss Sadie's stories about Jinx and Ned.

Compass

Abilene has a compass that belongs to her father and has the inscription, St. Dizier. October 8, 1918. Abilene thinks the inscription refers to the manufacturer, but later learns the compass belonged to Ned and is inscribed with his date and place of death.

Fishing Lure

Abilene finds a fishing lure with Ned's letters that is mentioned both in the letters and Miss Sadie's stories.

Cork

Abilene finds a cork among Jinx's keepsakes that once sat on a bottle of Shady's hooch...
