One Short, One Long. July 3, 1936. Abilene, Lettie, and Ruthanne spend a day playing on the school playground. However, Abilene cannot help but make connections between the stories and the keepsakes she has found. Abilene also finds herself making connections between Jinx and Gideon. It gives Abilene some relief to realize she has finally found her father in Manifest. Lettie and Ruthanne begin talking about the Rattler again, suggesting new suspects. Ruthanne suggests Mr. Cooper, the barber.
Abilene finds Lettie and Ruthanne outside the post office. They watch Mr. DeVore sort the mail and place a note in Velma T's box. Then Mr. DeVore writes out a telegram. Abilene listens, aware of what the signals mean because of some time...
