Dead or Alive, Miss Sadie's Divining Parlor, No-Man's-Land Summary
Dead or Alive. June 17, 1936. Abilene finds reference to the burning of the cross in front of the German Fraternal Hall and finds it outrageous even as she is glad to find yet another article that supports Miss Sadie's stories. Lettie and Ruthanne are out of town, so Abilene spends a few days keeping busy gathering plants for Miss Sadie. This morning she goes to the newspaper to see Hattie Mae. Abilene asks Hattie Mae about Gideon, but she does not seem willing to talk about him. Hattie Mae suggests that something happened to Gideon in Manifest that left him unwilling to talk about it or to return to Manifest.
Miss Sadie's Divining Parlor. Abilene goes to Miss Sadie's later that day in a bad mood and bypasses the house...
