Dean Grieber

Dean Grieber is a high school student and the main character of the novel. Dean lives with his parents and younger brother, Alex. Dean used to drive him and his brother to school but now the gas shortage have forced Dean and Alex to ride the bus. Dean has a crush on Astrid Heyman, a girl that he goes to school with.

Dean has always been short, but the summer prior to this school year, he grew in height and so he is much taller now. In a way, Dean is an introvert. He is a little bit shy and likes to keep to himself. Dean and his brother Alex have a very close relationship. They tend to do things together after school. Additionally, when Dean was driving, he drove his brother to school prior to driving himself to the high school.
