Part One, Fall: Chapters Six-Eight Summary
Chapter Six begins with an entry into a journal by Tess, expressing her opinions of the different people on the ranch and her duties, such as collecting eggs. While in the coop, Tess in interrupted by Nate. Nate shows Tess the right way to collect eggs and the two flirt a bit before Nate heads out to find Willa. Tess heads to the corral to see what is going on just in time to see a calf castrated. Tess faints to the annoyance of Willa and Nate carries her to the house. Once there, Tess expresses her feelings for Willa, only to be reminded by Nate that Willa has not asked for anything and regardless of the outcome next year will lose two thirds of her ranch to strangers.
