Narrator
The unnamed narrator survives the devastation of the Darkness and the Fall to tell the story of its hero and victims, and to recall with bitter irony and deep pathos his whirlwind friendship that summer with Alex and Mysty. He is a 19-year old Brown University student in a faltering economy aggravated by extreme global warming and had been living with his mother in Brooklyn before he follows her to her family's home in the Dominican Republic. He admits that he had little ambition and no good prospects despite his obvious intelligence and sophistication. While the narrator does not change very much over the course of his narrative of that last summer of the known world, he seems to have changed a great deal between his youth and the time of his narrative present at an unspecified age.
