Summary

In the Foreword, when the Mayor, David Prentiss, comments that he looks forward to the war, Todd regrets having set him free. However, he knows that with the Answer bombing the city and the Spackle army advancing on them that he had no other choice in order to keep Viola safe.

This book rotates between three first person narrators which includes Todd, Viola and the Return. In “It Begins: Two Battles” Todd narrates first. Because he has to keep an eye on the Mayor, Todd goes into battle with him.

In Viola’s narration, one of the men who surrounds her as she tries to ride Acorn to the place where the scout ship has landed tells her that the Spackle are attacking. Todd takes over the narration as the Mayor tells him that war will make...
