Annie

Annie is one of the protagonists of the novel. After divorcing Alan, she soon meets and marries Graham. Though she is initially afraid of loving him, she eventually gives herself over to him. Before the birth of their daughter, Sarah, Annie pursues her dreams of becoming a photographer. Though she has success with two shows, negative reviews, coupled with Sarah's arrival, distract her from her youthful goals. Throughout Sara's growing up, Annie continues taking photos, yet largely lets the craft die.

She becomes consumed in Graham's life and world, which are both centered around his bookstore. Together they host readings and extravagant parties. For a time, this satisfies Annie. Yet when she is in her sixties, she realizes that Graham seems more distant than ever, hoping an upcoming event will cure his strangeness. Later that night, however, Graham dies in his sleep.
