Summary

In Chapter 21, when Annie confronts Frieda about Graham's affair with Rosemary, she is furious to discover Frieda kept the secret from her. Frieda says the relationship meant nothing, and was merely evidence of his "Grahamness. Just his appetite, for everything" (205). When Annie says she hates him, Frieda counters her. Though Annie realizes Frieda is right, she wishes Graham were back so she could hit him. Frieda says if he were back then they could talk about the affair, hold each other and cry. Annie feels jealous: she knows Frieda got to do this when their marriage dismantled. Her sorrow quickly turns to anger.

In Chapter 22, on their way back to New York, Lucas and Jeanne talk about Annie and Frieda. Jeanne finds their relationship strange. Lucas intermittently drifts into thoughts about his parents, occasionally interrupted by Jeanne's observations regarding Annie. Lucas thinks she...
