Summary
Back in the present, Lisa describes the terrain she passes through as she cuts across the ocean in her speedboat. She describes a day when she and Ma-ma-oo hiked around the area near Costi Island; "she showed me where the winter and summer camps used to be, where people picked berries or had traplines" (192). Lisa spends time thinking of how the early explorers would no doubt have been overwhelmed and "daunted by both the terrain and new languages they encountered" (193). She then gives a Haisla language overview, giving the example that their language is similar to the languages spoken in Bella Bella and River's Inlet -- like how Spanish and French are related and share commonalities.
