Summary
Vivian arranged for each of the children to spend some time with their biological father who lived in San Diego. Bailey visited first and told Maya that he wouldn’t have to go again. Maya visited him for three weeks over the summer. Loretta, her father’s young wife, met Maya at the train station. Loretta was small and petite. Maya was twice her size and had an adult voice. Loretta was in shock. Bailey's and Maya's father had lied to Loretta about the ages of his kids.
Loretta was cool toward Maya during her entire visit. Maya's father didn’t have much to say to her. While her father and stepmother worked, Maya spent her time at a nearby library, the San Diego Zoo, and at the movie theater. She looked forward to the three-week stay ending.
