Summary
Chapter Two opens with the following words: “It is midnight. The rain is beating on the windows. I am calm. All is sleeping” (87). This voice soon becomes Jacques Moran, an agent who also has a son also called Jacques, and he declares that he is writing a report. He begins to narrate the story of how he first heard of Molloy: it was a Sunday, and he was sitting in his garden, about to go to mass, when his colleague Gaber arrives to give him an order to “see Molloy” (87). Though Moran tells him he is uninterested in the job, he agrees to take the case on when he is told that their boss Youdi specifically requested him, the flattery of which appeals to Moran. The visit from Gaber causes Moran to miss mass, and he finds out that his son went without him...
