Chapters 36-41, Epilogue Summary and Analysis

Bram is preparing to perform when a fire breaks out at the circus. Bram and Curpo are separated as they work to save the lives of those in attendance. Bram and Mo find Curpo, but despite their best efforts, Curpo cannot be saved. Bram is devastated, as he feels he has lost one of his family.

In chapter thirty-seven, Bram and Mo's life changes forever when a drunk gets into the elephant tent and attacks Modoc. Mo is driven to self defense when the man attacks her with a pitchfork. The man jabs the bull hook in Modoc's eye, blinding her. Modoc steps on the man's head, beheading him. Bram rushes to the scene, too late to save the man, or Modoc's eye.
