Chapters 16-20 Summary and Analysis

Bram and Modoc spend hours in the water and gradually lose their strength. Bram decides that it is time to give up the fight and tells Modoc to take his arm in her mouth so that when she sinks into the water he will sink with her. Bram silently says goodbye to all of those who love him and apologizes to his father for not being able to take care of Modoc as he promised. The two start to sink and Bram hears a rumble in the distance. A large splash startles Modoc and the two break through the water to find a large ship. Bram is helped aboard and Modoc is lifted onto the deck by a crane.
