Chapters 6-10 Summary and Analysis

Bram and Gertie head out for a picnic with Modoc. The day is magical as Bram watches Gertie dance atop the great elephant's back. Bram thinks while Gertie sleeps close to him about his father's teachings and the wonders of nature. Bram believes that nature is a direct gift from God, one to be treasured always. Bram also realizes that he loves Gertie, she is his first love. Modoc shares in the joys of the day with the two young people, as much a piece of Bram as the heart that beats in his chest.
