Chapters 12 through 19 Summary

In Chapter Twelve, Jim and Jonnie return home to discover that there are several men at the house. They are Sam, Ab Selaway, Ben Mills, Mr. Burke and Rutledge. The men say that animals have been taken from several homesteads. Rutledge says Jim will be able to help track the thieves. They believe white men took the animals and say they've sent for the sheriff but that he's out of the area. The victims of the thefts say they found only a couple of boot prints, indicating that the thieves were white rather than Indian. Daniel says that he believes Jim can track the thieves and Rutledge agrees. Sam Mullins asks Jim if he can and Jim assures the men that he'll be able to follow the signs left behind.
