Chapter 21: In Which Madame Olenka Is Dealt With
Captain Francis watched as the young couple crossed the gangplank of The Water Rat onto the dock at Graffon Landing. She was lovely and exotic and was wearing a purple cloak and gloves. But, the man with her seemed like a dubious character and someone he should keep his eye on. They had no luggage; but, they had round-trip tickets. The woman seemed like a titled lady. But, the man, although expensively attired, did not seem like he held any title. He couldn’t imagine what they wanted in the little lakefront community. The man who wore a long coat, slouched hat, and white scarf reminded the captain of someone. But, he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
Max and Pia walked to town. She told Max to wait outside while she entered...
